Reality Based Recovery

Experience Reality-Based Recovery at Better Days

Choosing where you pursue treatment is an incredibly important part of your recovery process. Each facility has its own methods, some of which may be much more effective on you than others.

At Better Days, we use a healing methodology called the reality-based recovery method. It could be just what you need to turn the corner and start making more efficient progress towards your long-term health and wellness goals.

Keep reading to learn what the reality-based recovery model is and how you can benefit from it. Or, get started with the admissions process today by giving us a call at (844) 991-3135.

What is Reality-Based Recovery?

Reality-based recovery is a type of psychotherapy. More specifically, it’s a type of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy that places an emphasis on being in the moment and facing reality. Through this emphasis, reality-based recovery helps patients to develop better problem-solving skills and to make healthier choices to achieve their goals.

Better Days has created its own special version of the reality-based recovery model. But the methodology is based on William Glasser’s three R’s system. These are Responsibility, Right (and wrong), and Reality. He found that everyone has five basic needs that must be fulfilled in order to live a happy life. They are:

  • Survival
  • Power
  • Love
  • Fun
  • Freedom

The reality-based recovery model helps you to explore each of these basic needs and whether they’re being satisfied in your life. Through examining your lived experiences, you’ll identify what’s preventing you from fulfilling your potential and causing you to turn to substance abuse.

Once we know what’s happening, our team of addiction specialists will bring your focus to the problem area and help you to figure out the choices that you need to start making in order to achieve your goals.

What Should I Expect?

Better Days uses the reality-based recovery model in each of its treatment programs. So the nature of what your program will be like can vary some. For example, our reality-based recovery offerings include IOPs, PHPs, and outpatient care, among other options.

Regardless of which you pick, you should expect to spend a lot of time in therapy. Therapy is where the rubber hits the road on your path to recovery. It’s where you’ll explore the various aspects of your life, discover what’s been leading you to substance abuse, and come up with strategies for dealing with it.

But that’s not all you’ll get out of your recovery plan. We also believe in the importance of having fun. That’s why we regularly lead our residents on outings in SoCal and its surrounding areas.

These outings give you the chance to connect with the other patients in your program, enjoy their company, and benefit from the social support that they can provide you with.

Is Reality-Based Recovery Right for Me?

Treatment centers use many different methodologies. When you’re first starting to look into them, it can be overwhelming to determine which one is best for you. But we think that you’ll find that the reality-based recovery model stands apart from the rest.

We believe this because of how practical the reality-based recovery model is. Often, treatment centers use highly theoretical approaches that sound great on paper but can be tough to implement in the real world.

The reality-based recovery model is targeted at your unique experiences, emotions, and everyday life. It teaches you real skills that you can start using right away. The methodology also takes a look at your decision-making process and teaches you what you can do to begin making healthier ones that help you work towards your goals.

So if you’ve been searching for a treatment plan that will provide you with tools that you can actually use in the real world, then the reality-based recovery method could be your best option.

Why Some Rehab Programs Fail

When thinking about why the reality-based recovery model is successful, it can be helpful to understand what can make other rehab programs fail. Generally, when a rehab program has failed to help a patient, it’s because it wasn’t able to help that patient fulfill one of their five basic needs.

For example, maybe the program failed to help the resident feel powerful and in control of their life. Or, maybe it was sorely lacking in fun and that caused the patient to lose interest. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter which of the five basic needs that a program failed to help a patient fulfill. If at least one of the needs remains unfulfilled then the patient may end up relapsing eventually.

That’s why the treatment that we provide focuses heavily on each of the five basic needs that a human needs to fulfill in order to keep themselves satisfied. We’ll work with you on each of them so that by the time you’re ready to re-enter the world, your substance abuse will already feel like a distant memory.
