What is alcohol abuse, exactly?

Alcohol abuse, or alcoholism, is a chronic condition that’s characterized by uncontrolled drinking and a preoccupation with the consumption of alcohol. Those who abuse alcohol form both a physical and emotional dependence on the substance, which makes it difficult to quit drinking without professional support.

How do I know if I need treatment?

It can be tough to determine where the line lies between regular alcohol consumption and abuse. For example, many people regularly consume alcohol without feeling dependent on it to function. So, how do you know if the time for treatment has come?

The answer is to keep an eye out for the following symptoms. If you notice that you’re experiencing them more and more regularly, then there’s a good chance that you’ve formed a dependency on alcohol that needs to be resolved with professional help. These are the symptoms:

  • Trying to drink without others knowing
  • An inability to control cravings
  • Desiring to quit drinking but feeling incapable of doing so
  • Increasing alcohol tolerance
  • Inability to get through everyday activities without alcohol
  • Problems with friends and family because of drinking
  • Neglecting responsibilities
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol

Is daily drinking a sign of alcoholism?

Maybe you don’t feel like you’re an alcoholic but you do drink daily. If so, you might be wondering if you’re at risk of developing a dependency on alcohol. The short answer is you’re probably fine, but you should try not to increase your alcohol consumption any further.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has set guidelines for the daily and weekly consumption of alcohol. They say that women should have no more than three drinks in a day, while men should have no more than four. Their guidelines also set a weekly limit of seven drinks a week for women and 14 drinks a week for men.

Keep in mind, these guidelines are based on a standard drink size, which is 12 fluid ounces of beer, 1.5 fluid ounces of hard alcohol, and 5 fluid ounces of wine.

If your daily drinking falls within these guidelines, then you’re fine. But if you’re regularly drinking more than this in a day or in a week, then you have an increased risk of becoming dependent on alcohol, if you haven’t already.

How do people recover from alcohol abuse?

Treatment for alcohol abuse typically begins with detox then alcohol rehab. It’s important that you have professional supervision while doing this, as some of the alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be quite serious. These include hallucinations, delusions, and even seizures. Better Days will watch over you while you detox to ensure that you make it through the process safely.

After you’ve completed detox, you’ll be ready to receive formal care for your condition. This can be done through intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), or residential rehab. Each will give you the chance to work with therapists and addiction specialists who can help you address the root causes of your condition.

Once you’ve completed this phase of your treatment, you’ll be ready to begin transitioning your recovery into the real world. Many people find it helpful to stay in a sober living home during this time. They can provide you with support and structure while you adjust to maintaining your sobriety in the real world.

How long will my recovery take?

Your recovery timeline will vary based on the severity of your addiction and how you respond to treatment. Detoxing from alcohol typically takes 5-7 days, with symptoms being at their worst 72 hours after your last drink.

After that, the most intensive part of your treatment will likely last for at least a month. But PHPs and IOPs can be extended for up to 12 months depending on how quickly you respond to them.

Once you’ve finished the formal phase of your treatment, you’ll still want to receive outpatient support for some time. Getting this type of care is an essential part of maintaining your sobriety for the long term.
