What is a PHP?

PHP stands for partial hospitalization program. It’s one of the treatment options that’s available to you once you’ve completed your detox.

PHPs take place in a treatment center. But you won’t have to commit to staying at one for a month or more before signing up. Instead, PHPs ask you to spend your days at a treatment center while leaving you in control over how you spend your nights.

This makes partial hospitalization programs a good option for people who would like to be able to sleep in their own beds at night without having to sacrifice the quality of the care they receive.

Who are PHPs for?

Partial hospitalization programs can be a good treatment plan for anyone who’s been struggling with drug or alcohol abuse. At Better Days, our Anaheim Drug PHP program is regularly used to help people who are recovering from addictions to:

  • Heroin
  • Methamphetamine
  • Opioids
  • Benzodiazepine
  • Cocaine
  • And many other substances

PHPs are meant for people who have already completed their detox. If you haven’t done so yet, then Better Days offers a high-quality medical detox program that will help you do it. We make it easy to transition directly from detox to the long-term treatment plan of your choice.

What should I expect during my PHP?

You should expect your partial hospitalization program to last anywhere from 4-8 weeks. The exact amount of time that’s required of you will vary based on where you’re currently at in the recovery process and how quickly you respond to the treatment that you receive.

During your PHP, you’ll be in our treatment center receiving care from highly trained professionals for the bulk of the day. The typical hours of a PHP are from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, but this can also vary based on your individual needs.

While you’re at our facility, you’ll receive one-on-one therapy from physicians who specialize in addiction. They’ll help you explore the root causes of your substance abuse issues and to develop strategies for dealing with those issues in healthier ways.

You’ll also get to participate in a wide variety of group activities during your stay with us. We believe that it’s important for our patients to have fun during their recovery. Group activities give us the chance to show you how happy you can be while living a sober lifestyle.

Group activities also give you the chance to connect with the other patients in your program. Forming these social bonds is an important part of your recovery, as studies have found that doing so reduces the risk of relapse and improves your chances for long-term success.

Is a PHP right for me?

PHPs are just one form of treatment for substance abuse. It may or may not be the right choice for you. To answer this question, you’ll need to determine what you’re hoping to get out of your treatment.

For example, if you’re looking for intensive care but also the freedom to spend the night at home with your family, then a partial hospitalization program could be a good choice. However, a PHP might not be a good option if you’re looking for a highly-structured rehab experience. Our residential rehab is a better choice for that.

Another factor to consider is how conducive your home environment is to your recovery. Your family might be highly supportive and capable of giving you the strength that you need to reach the finish line.

Alternatively, maybe you live in a home where other people abuse substances. Or in a place with people who tend to trigger your addictive behaviors. If either of these statements applies to you, then a PHP may not be a good choice for your recovery.

Only you can make the final decision as to whether a PHP is right for your healing process. But if you need help with weighing the factors that go into making that decision, then reach out to us. Our experts at our drug & alcohol PHP center in Anaheim CA are standing by to take your phone call and to help you make the right decision for your recovery.

What makes PHPs at Better Days Different?

Better Days uses a treatment method called the reality-based recovery model. This involves using your lived experiences as teaching moments.

For example, in therapy, you might discover that there’s a particular event in your life that tends to trigger your desire to use illicit substances. If so, your therapist can help you delve into that and create healthier response mechanisms to it. This approach is highly practical, teaching you how to live a sober lifestyle one step at a time.

We can also personalize each of our treatment plans. So if some aspect of your PHP isn’t working for you, we’ll come up with a solution together and alter your care accordingly. Having access to this type of targeted support could be the key to your recovery.
